Dolph held the letter down and away from him, brought it back up and read it again. Is there a message within a message? Would Q hide some other meaning in plain sight? I have to assume so. First of all, he couldn’t reject the offer; that much is plain. Like Joseph working for Pharaoh in the Bible, perhaps God has put Q in a place of authority that will help us all get out.

He still wants to work with me. N’dalu probably used threats to get him to change sides. But what if he really wanted to go to work for N’dalu? What if N’dalu convinced him that the riches of the mines were worth betraying me? What if he is making great money and eating steaks while I rot in this prison!

Dolph knew deep inside that he was envious, disappointed, and afraid, all mixed together into a rancid emotional soup. I must meditate and sort this all out. As he positioned himself on his bed and let his mind empty, he recognized that his meditation was not just an asset, but also a weakness. A cave of refuge, but also a place to hide from reality.

And how will this affect the women? Will Angelica still come to see me? And will she bring Maura? He felt the familiar lust course through his veins.

A new scream pierced the afternoon humidity.

“Camilo did the right thing,” he said aloud to himself. “We must first survive before we escape.”
